Political Profiles series.
When Bloomberg--zealous, obstinate, and motivated--desired a third turn as mayor of New York, he challenged its term limit law and won. Moving from his early years as "a regular kid" through his success as a news service provider to his potential 2012 presidential run, the volume offers a somewhat useful (if quickly dated) synopsis of Bloomberg's career. Photographs help break up the pages. Timeline, websites. Bib., ind.

Supreme Court Justices series.
For each Supreme Court Justice, the life experiences that shaped his or her character are examined along with their Court decisions; special emphasis is placed on important cases over which they presided. John Marshall offers historical context from the colonial era. Illustrations, photographs, and excerpts from their writings provide additional detail and insight and help break up the dauntingly dense-looking texts. Timeline, websites. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Supreme Court Justices titles: Earl Warren, John Marshall, Sonia Sotomayor, and Thurgood Marshall.

Classical Composers series.
Clara Schumann, along with managing a tumultuous relationship with her father and tending to her erratic husband and their eight often-ill children, was able to maintain a career as a world-renowned concert pianist (and composer) for over six decades. The information in this thorough volume could be better organized, but it's engaging nonetheless. Archival artwork supports the text. Timeline, websites. Bib., ind.

Bib., ind. Review covers these Political Profiles titles: Al Gore, Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Classical Composers series.
These thorough, well-researched composers' biographies focus almost solely on their subjects' lives, with a few glimpses at historical context. Verdi incorporates brief summaries of his major operas, but neither book elucidates the composers' musical styles. Mendelssohn's story is meatier, as its subject attempts to reconcile gender roles with professional ambitions. A list of suggested recordings would have been a welcome addition. Timeline, websites. Bib., ind. Review covers these Classical Composers titles: Giuseppe Verdi and Italian Opera and Gifted Sister.
