A human-like dog packs everything he'll need for a trip to the beach (including his goldfish in its bowl) and boards a bus labeled "BEACH." The swimmingly funny story is filled with sight gags, unexpected twists, and only a few sentences: "Fun in the sun, fun in the sand, sand in the suit." Energetic pencil and watercolor pictures are set against luscious backgrounds.

The lyrics of the popular Halloween song "Monster Mash" provide the textual backdrop for Catrow's illustrative dance. Groovy, be-bopping monsters rock out on instruments and get down doing the "graveyard smash." Propelled by the silly, fun-loving ghouls, the colorful illustrations in a wash of teal, pink, and purple add just enough goofiness and goriness to entice young trick-or-treaters.

I Like to Read series.
Readers follow a pesky fly as it wreaks havoc through a theater, from an usher's enormous nose, into the audience, and then through the orchestra. Spreads with detailed close-ups of humorously unattractive victims offer much to look at and effectively convey chaos, but the crowding of so much visual action makes the fly hard to follow.

Charismatic and humorously overconfident dog Max Spaniel brings readers along to his dog show where Max does anything but bark, shake hands, and roll over: "There are many dogs in the show, but there is only one me." Zippy jokes and wild-and-crazy illustrations will make readers root for the wacky pup.

In his second story, dog Max Spaniel becomes a "great chef," but when a tour bus driver orders "one hundred pizzas with everything," Max knows he's in over his head. The humorous text with numerous puns is easy to read. Zany, exuberant watercolor illustrations expand the story, showing Max's chaotic kitchen and pizza problems.

Announcing that he's "not a dog" (despite all appearances to the contrary) but instead is "a great hunter," spaniel Max proceeds to gather everyday items found in the yard in order to piece together a dinosaur skeleton. Humorous illustrations in Catrow's recognizable frenzied style extend the limited text, telling more of the story than Max relates through words.
