"The hairy green magician / makes frogspawn disappear. / Kapow! As if by magic, / frogs hop from Max's ear!" Monster Max's party is gross ("TA-DAH! It's DRAGON jelly time, / their scrumptious, sizzling treat") but not too gross, and the toe-tapping, onomatopoeia-filled rhymes ("SPLAT! SPLODGE!") are the perfect soundtrack for the ooey-gooey art featuring Muppetlike beasts in Smarties colors.

Broccoli-averse monsters describe their omnivorous eating habits in this fresh romp. The "monsters" turn out to be human children who ultimately mistake icky broccoli crowns for yummy maple trees--and find that they love the stuff. The too-obvious denouement reflects wishful thinking on adults' part, but it's dressed in terrific gouache art that resembles cut-paper collage.

When Henry, a forest creature, decides to sing, the others protest that he's no good. Disturbed by their quarreling, the Maker of All Things asks the creatures to think about what voices are for. Although somewhat moralistic, the story and its illustrations, with their bright flat areas of color and imaginative nonspecific animals, have humor and a light touch.
