With a few well-chosen words, this poem evokes the pleasures of summer, as readers follow the activities of two children throughout the day. In the morning, "Sun sings. / Wings fan. / Swing on porch / With toast and jam." At night there's a marshmallow roast. "Neighbors visit / Into the night. / Marshmallow kisses / By firefly light." Takabayashi's watercolors are full of delicately painted, homey details.

Pleasingly simple illustrations depict a young girl's walk down the street with her mother through a colorful urban neighborhood. The word repetition in the lively, rhyming text adds a festive tone to the duo's quest for "drippy, drippy" ice cream cones. The square-shaped book, perfect for little hands, will encourage listener participation.

Rhyming verse that emphasizes simple words such as 'new', 'moo', 'two', and 'shoe' combines with simple, child-friendly illustrations in this board book. The Mylar mirror on the last page will add sure-fire appeal, however, the concepts and artwork make this book more appropriate for older babies than for the publisher's age designation of "Newborn."
