A depressed Parisian giraffe bemoans her lonely, do-nothing life until her apartment building is torn down, prompting her to take a chance at adventure. While the story is little more than existential musing, the golden-toned paintings placing realistically drawn animals in human poses and settings are oddly compelling.

The hug they end up giving him, however, is exactly what he wants. The book is saved from sentimentality by the stylized art, which sets boldly outlined figures against cool silver backgrounds, and the foldout pages that reveal the parents' quirky gift ideas.

En route she encounters Jerome, a fearsome dog, but a friendship is born when she saves him from drowning. The drawings of chubby Roberta and crocodile-toothed Jerome are humorous accompaniments for the awkwardly worded but appealing French import.
