(3) YA Illustrated by Fred Fordham. This graphic-format adaptation masterfully captures the quiet introspection and mythic quality of Le Guin’s classic. The muted watercolor-style art, with its fluid linework, enhances the ethereal tone, immersing readers in the journey of Ged, a young wizard, as he confronts a dark force he'd unwittingly unleashed. Although the minimal text may challenge newcomers to the tale, fans will appreciate this visually distinctive reimagining. (To fit the format, and in consultation with Le Guin's son, Fordham trimmed and truncated some of the text and events.) A thoughtful, atmospheric adaptation that remains true to Le Guin’s vision.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by S. D. Schindler. "Oh, how nice! It's raining mice! / Oh, happy day! All the dogs have run away!" Using simple, occasionally lyrical rhymes, a napping cat describes its dreams; when they turn scary, the cat's owner (and her lap) comes to the rescue. There's not quite enough to the book to give it staying power, although the painterly illustrations will make eyes linger.

(2) YA Le Guin returns to the "Western Shore" (Gifts, Voices) to explore issues of liberty, loyalty, and self-realization. Gavir records his path from educated but unquestioning slave to sanctuary-seeker. Through his journey, he comes to value the healing ability of true knowledge and the power of story. Le Guin's own storytelling and analytical prowess continue to enchant readers.

(2) YA Memer is a child of rape, her unknown father one of the Alds who seized the city of Ansul eighteen years before. The Alds are illiterate book-destroyers who punish the very act of reading. In the end it is Memer who will be the new "Reader" and lead the reclamation of knowledge. This is an artfully written political fable with compelling resonance.

(2) YA "Gifts" in this carefully imagined world are destructive powers, nurtured as defense against neighboring domains. Orrec's family's gift is "unmaking"--but Orrec dreads the power to destroy by dint of "eye, hand, word, will." Orrec and his friend Gry are unique, thoughtful young rebels whose struggles have no easy or predictable outcome, while Le Guin's own gifts illuminate every description.

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by Julie Downing. When Tom, a mouse with wanderlust, boards a train, an old woman finds him in her room and becomes his traveling companion. The illustrations are from Tom's perspective, from his lowly vantage point on the floor of the closet or caught in the rush of human feet. Told in four brief chapters, this quiet tale of comradeship between two previously lonely globetrotters has an inviting freshness.

She forgets her siblings' warnings and flies to the city, where a man gives her a comfortable home. However, just as her siblings had predicted, she finds she's traded freedom for stardom, so she escapes and finds a suitable home with her mother. Another satisfying book for admirers of the series.
