Gardening guinea pigs Nibbles and Posie find six caterpillars eating their dandelion crop. They keep them as pets--then they disappear from the jar. With some help, the pair solves the mystery (they're now butterflies). Kids already familiar with the phenomenon of metamorphosis may not sit for a second reading of this story, but the mixed-media illustrations are warm and expressive.

"Every guinea pig in Dandeville loved dandelion leaves"; hence the eventual dandelion shortage. Young Nibbles, however, finds one last dandelion, reads up on the subject, and soon Dandeville has lots of weeds again--and Nibbles becomes a dandelion gardener. Mixed-media illustrations of sturdy-looking guinea pigs are inviting, despite the somewhat nonsensical story.

Five-year-old Enrico has a problem when he starts school: he doesn't know how to make new friends. His first efforts fail (though they don't seem all that misguided). Then his little brother, oddly wise beyond his years, saves the day by advising him to be himself. The illustrations feature simple, appealing cat characters, with occasional humorous labels added in a different typeface.

Tabitha comes up with some unlikely but amusing ways to make her loose tooth fall out, including offering it to her father's Venus's-flytrap and tying it to her pet tortoise. Nothing works--until she sneezes. Though the story is rather flat, it's easy to sympathize with Tabitha's situation, and the simple, uncluttered illustrations will keep readers' attention.
