Reich offers up a rhythmic, rhyming celebration of family, particularly the family's youngest member: "Call the guests to gather round, / grab a chair and take a seat. / Baby's fussing, must be hungry. / Hurry up, it's time to eat!" While this multiethnic, multiracial extended family cooks a special meal of enchiladas, ravioli, and black-eyed peas, they pass the baby from person to person--hugging, playing, and bouncing. The illustrations have their own rhythm, flipping from left to right on consecutive spreads with periodic full-bleed crowd scenes that encourage lingering. The kaleidoscopic use of color and layering of media lend depth, emphasizing the family's love and joy. Details such as Doggie scarfing up crumbs, a picture knocked askew, and Grandma looking irritated capture a mildly controlled chaos that will be familiar to many readers. It's lovely, too, to see the family gathering for no particular reason other than to be together. When the coffee spills and Baby dumps the sugar bowl on her doll's head, dinner has reached its inevitable conclusion. "Everybody grab a napkin. / Baby's made a great big mess!" The adults are done in, struggling to keep their eyes open, but Baby's ready for another helping.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Adam Gustavson. Following a foreword by singer Peter Yarrow, this biography of troubadour Seeger packs a storied life into relatively few pages but doesn't skimp on the essentials. Reich adeptly tailors tough concepts (e.g., the Great Depression; blacklisting) for young readers. Gustavson's dignified art makes young Pete look like Everykid, underscoring the book's message: you're never too young to make music--or a difference. Bib.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Adam Gustavson. Far from an overnight success, The Beatles were actually a long time in the making. Reich follows each musician before he was a Beatle, then shows how they came together. The story ends with the Fab Four still in England in 1963, before their "invasion" of America. With Child's own writing as the source for a baker's dozen of apt quotes, this is as truthful an account as could be hoped for--while still being told from Julia Child's cat's point of view. Reich has a storyteller's instinct for entrancing incident and a poet's gift for sound and sensory detail. The roofs and markets of Paris and Julia's busy kitchen all spring to life in a pleasing palette in Bates's art.

(2) 4-6 This thoroughly researched book draws on primary sources, both Clara's own diaries and her voluminous correspondence with her husband (more comfortable writing than speaking to each other, she and her husband maintained a joint diary) and other musicians of the times. Reich's lucid, quietly passionate biography is liberally illustrated with photographs and reproductions. Ind.
