It's time for bed, but "nighttime noises scare the sheep. / Really, who could go to sleep?" Enter a border collie who settles the sheep down, integrating core concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction. Soft colored-pencil illustrations set a peaceful pastoral scene; the text's assonant sounds are soothing.

(4) K-3 Tales of the World series. Illustrated by Kristina Rodanas. Life in Elena's Guatemalan village is difficult, but she finds satisfaction in trying to master Spanish in school so that she can share the stories she reads with younger brother Luis and her mother, who speaks Mam (a Mayan language). The story itself is flat, but traditional clothing, cultural details, and Central American scenery are strongly realized in the evocative illustrations.

(3) PS Illustrated by Margot Apple. Shaw's infectious rhyming story about a crew of sheep who crash their jeep is successfully presented in a lap-sized board book edition. Apple's expressively scribbly illustrations and Shaw's concise, very funny text work as well for toddlers as they do for the original edition's slightly older audience.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Margot Apple. In their seventh rhyming outing, the intrepid sheep take a rocket ride into space. The energetic colored-pencil drawings reveal green space-sheep hidden on board; the sheep never see them, but it's the aliens who get their earth brethren back home safe and sound. The somewhat tired formula bounces along as well as it ever has.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Howard Fine. "Moonlight, / June night, / Just-right-for-raccoon night." Indeed, it's the ideal time for a raccoon family to hunt for dinner. Unfortunately, the humans have closed the garbage-can lids too tightly, and the raccoons have a terrible time trying to open them. The taut rhyming text will prove fun to read aloud, and the blue-tinted images of the raccoon family foraging at night perfectly capture the mischievous mood.

(4) K-3 Let's Investigate series. Lots of color photographs of the winged mammals will draw readers to this volume, which identifies several different species, discusses their habitats, and describes how they fly, eat, and sleep. The information is presented in a scattershot, unfocused fashion, as when the word echolocation is used in a sidebar but not defined until thirteen pages later. Glos.
