Set in Civil War–era Iowa, this prequel to The Luck of the Buttons and Button Down introduces Grandaddy Ike at eleven years old. Ylvisaker weaves several strands--Ike's naive enthusiasm for war, his friendship with smart-as-a-whip Albirdie, his discovery of runaway slaves--with her trademark rambunctiousness, good humor, and delightful historical detail. A short author's note with historical background is appended.

In this old-timey, small-town tale, eleven-year-old Ned, newly smitten with football, tries to make his mark against considerable odds, including the physical decline of his beloved grandfather. This warm and funny book is a welcome re-visit to the deliciously original Button family first introduced in The Luck of the Buttons.

Twelve-year-old Tugs Button thinks there's something fishy about the new fellow in town. She follows up on her hunch, braves adult skepticism, and delivers the miscreant to the authorities. Beneath this plot scaffolding is a subtle story of a clever child outgrowing her family. Set in the small-town Midwest of 1929, the tale features strongly realized characters and delicate, original writing.

Unable to keep up with his three older brothers and coddled by his mother, Harold Sylvester George Klein (whom everyone calls "Little") fights constantly for respect. He always comes up short until crossing paths with a charismatic dog named LeRoy. Ylvisaker's boy-meets-dog story ripples with nostalgia. Though they may not be surprised, readers will cheer when the underdogs save the day.

A school assignment prompts nine-year-old Isabelle to write a letter to her deceased father and inspires her to write to him and other, living, relatives for the next several years. Isabelle chronicles everyday life during World War II and the scandal of her Protestant mother's remarriage to a Catholic doctor. Some letters are redundant, but the epistolary format is a nice alternative to diary books.
