Last Apprentice series.
Illustrated by
Julek Heller.
This volume presents the characteristics of mythical creatures encountered in the Last Apprentice series and how to defeat them, including notes and anecdotes from the Spook and his apprentices. Series fans, especially those who enjoy nonfiction, will be entertained by the handbook format. Illustrations are softer-edged than those in previous volumes, but the stark and eerie are well represented.

From the British warrior-queen Boadicea to the Japanese heroine Yakami, who killed a sea monster, these stories feature twelve spirited, battle-strong women from around the world. Each overly dramatic account is accompanied by a brief introduction, a somewhat drab full-page watercolor painting, and a spot illustration. For basic information on these heroic women, this is a suitable collection. Bib., ind.

Abridgments of two famous novels preserve each book's most compelling incidents, but the brevity of each precludes much of the original's richness. Notes and informational sidebars throughout provide story comment and historical context, but clutter the book design and are distracting. The watercolor illustrations for Crusoe and the oil paintings for 20,000 Leagues nicely suit each story's mood and setting.
