Performed and narrated by Rebecca St. James. Vojtech pairs luminous but sentimental illustrations with the lyrics to the old English Christmas carol in this picture book/CD package. Donkey, cow, sheep, camel, and dove all sport satisfied expressions, proud of their part in welcoming the baby Jesus. Rebecca St. James’s recording includes spoken narration of the carol, a musical rendition, and an additional song; sheet music is included.

Vojtech's lovely art, which illustrates Alexander's classic hymn honoring God's work in creating the world, features a girl and boy exploring an idyllic countryside setting, but the flora and fauna take center stage. The wide borders that surround each double-page spread teem with plants and animals and command as much attention as the images they frame.

Full-page color illustrations of cheery meadow animals accompany the text of this nineteenth-century rhyme. For readers familiar with other versions, some of the language may seem odd: e.g., mother beaver says, "Beave. / We beave said the ten." John Langstaff's adaptation of this rhyme, which includes music, remains a far superior selection.

The trials and tribulations faced by the young of thirteen animals--from ducks to whales to cicadas--are detailed on each double-page spread; a dozen more are mentioned briefly at the book's end. The information covers a range of intriguing behaviors. While the portrayal of fuzzy, smiling animals is at odds with the harsh reality of the topic, the colorful illustrations of adult and baby animals contain excellent detail.

In a tale from the Scandinavian tradition, Vanishia, the daughter of the moon, rejects the fiery son of the sun and marries one of the Brothers of the Northern Lights, bringing the sun's vengeance upon herself and her husband. Luminous watercolors in contrasting blue and yellow tones with strong lines sweeping across wide skies lend a dreamy quality to this tragic tale.

Disney's Animal Kingdom series.
Illustrated by

Elephant calf Odon and the rest of the herd follow his mother, Silver Tusk, on an urgent daylong trek. He discovers the "ecstasy" of mud and dust, and when they finally meet up with Silver Tusk's sister and her herd, he makes his first strides in learning to use his long trunk. The watercolors lend atmosphere to this sometimes confusing journey. A guide to elephant communication is included along with various maps and plugs for Disney's Animal Kingdom.

A child on a camping trip with his parents watches an otter family that lives along the river. Human and otter activities parallel each other as they stretch, fish, eat, wrestle, and dream the day away. The detailed watercolors and their borders express the otters' playfulness and the observant narrator's appreciation of the natural world. An author's note about otters concludes the book.
