Shepard recounts the exploits of a boastful he-man named Shadusa who meets his match--and then some. The superhero stature of the characters translates to the deftly executed comic-book form. The frame-by-frame progression underlines the comic timing of the story as well as the supense. This fresh, funny, and perfectly paced narrative screams story hour, while the hugely appealing comic-book design will win reluctant readers.

Expert cut-paper collages show children interacting with nature. In a simple first-person text, children tell the sun, wind, clouds, rain, stars, and moon how they can play together: "I'll play with you, Sun. Meet me outside. I'll help you make shadows. I'll hide while you climb." The small-sized book, which features children of several different ethnicities, is a good introduction to some basic features of the natural world.

A simple, poetic text with plenty of repetition and metaphors describes tools (ruler, saw, wrench, anvil, chisel, etc.), while the illustrations show a young boy helping adult craftspeople build a carousel. Wisniewski's collages make use of a variety of papers and wood veneers in highly detailed illustrations that excel at showing hard-edged three-dimensional objects.
