In this amusing adaptation of "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain," a group of Arctic animals eagerly prepare for the return of their polar bear friend: "We will plan an arctic party when she comes. / We'll play music, tapping icicles and drums." The genial mixed-media illustrations hint at the surprise Polar Bear brings with her: two new cubs.

In each book, a kid visiting an out-of-town cousin receives Canada- or New England–specific gifts, one per day, during the twelve days of Christmas. On each spread, cheerful illustrations incorporate the presents or activities while chatty, overly explanatory letters written home to Mom and Dad give information; a map precedes each story and additional regional facts are appended. Review covers these titles: The Twelve Days of Christmas in New England and The Twelve Days of Christmas in Canada.

This book puts a frosty twist on the classic tune "If You're Happy and You Know It." Bouncy rhyming verses, perfectly matched to the song's rhythm, roll out as arctic friends, from polar bear to beluga whale, slide, ski, skate, and build a fort in the snow and ice. Mixed-media illustrations extend the text with silly details (e.g., a sunbathing moose).

"There were eight on the sled / and the caribou said, / 'It's slicker! Go quicker!'" Ten animal friends squeeze onto a toboggan and start a wild ride down a bumpy hill. Animals fall off one by one until only Caribou is left, and the fun begins again. This wintry variant of "Ten in the Bed" is accompanied by cheerfully silly illustrations.

A father wonders, in rhyme, what his young son would like to kiss--a dog? pig? skunk? mop? This playful story offers many silly suggestions before the dad asks for a kiss himself as he tucks his son into bed. The cheery illustrations of a towheaded, overalls-clad tot show amusing surroundings for the various "kissable" objects.

In another twist on the "new sibling" story, Mabel and her toys have a good life until little Noah arrives. Mabel's interactions with her stuffed animal friends, while serving no real role in the plot, are sweet, but her change of heart about the new baby is a little too quick to be believable. Soft ink-and-wash illustrations are effective at capturing the story's details.
