To join her two best friends at a pricey sleepaway camp outside of the city, plucky Katie, star of this entertaining graphic novel, puts up a flyer in her apartment building to advertise her entrepreneurial talents and earn some quick cash. Unfortunately, Katie is no match for spry Mr. Quinn, who can carry his own groceries up the stairs, or Mrs. Bell's plants, which require complicated watering instructions. Katie finds her perfect job cat-sitting for Ms. Madeline Lang, who has somehow kept her 217 felines a total secret from the building's snoopy super. These not-so-average cats have varied, impressive skills and intellects that they use to test Katie, so much so that she starts to suspect Ms. Lang might just be a supervillain...but things aren't that simple. Yue's drawing style will remind readers of Raina Telgemeier's work (most recently Guts, rev. 9/19), and the occasional departures from standard paneling keep the visuals feeling fresh. Venable includes a cast of supportive adults who provide Katie with scaffolding to grow out of old friends and into new hobbies that complement her love of animals. This enjoyable book (for which a sequel is promised) will pique the interest of readers who like their masked heroes with a penchant for animal activism.

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Stephanie Yue. Human Megan works alongside Mousenet, an underground society of intelligent mice committed to saving the planet. When they learn that lumber company Loggocorp plans to cut down an ancient rainforest, the friends investigate who really has ownership rights to the rainforest in hopes of saving it from destruction. This third series entry is a rollicking, Rescuers-like adventure with an environmental message.

In spring, summer, and fall, he explores, greets other creatures, and gathers stores for winter. When he pops out of his hole to find snow, let the cozy indoor winter activities begin! Cutaway art shows the mouse's humble underground abode, furnished with homey details.

When a plot to expose the mouse world threatens Operation Cool It, the plan to reverse climate change hatched in Mousenet, Megan and Uncle Fred take the whole colony on a wild road trip to save their efforts. The premise remains overblown, but this sequel's plot moves along at a quick clip and endearing new characters are introduced. Soft black-and-white illustrations add to the whimsy.

(4) 1-3 Graphic Universe: Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye series. Illustrated by Stephanie Yue. Absent-minded pet shop owner Mr. Venezi is behind in his rent; Charlotte the bookstore owner next door has too many books. They like each other but may have to move apart, unless Sasspants the guinea pig detective and sidekick Hamisher can figure out a way to help. Although the quirky graphic novel has appealing, emotive illustrations, the convoluted plot is difficult to follow.

(4) 1-3 Graphic Universe: Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye series. Illustrated by Stephanie Yue. After Sasspants, the pet-store guinea pig detective, is sold, she misses her sidekick, hamster Hamisher. Sasspants and Hamisher figure out independently what happened to a missing cat; they're joyfully reunited as they solve the case. This installment in the quirky graphic-novel series still strains for humor, but the zany antics are brought to life in the (slightly crowded) comic panels.

(4) 4-6 Illustrated by Stephanie Yue. Ten-year-old Megan's inventor uncle gives her "the Thumbtop," a tiny mouse-size computer, before she moves to live with her estranged father. Actual mice take notice of the device and, after establishing contact with Megan, propose a deal: give every mouse a Thumbtop, and they will save the world from climate change. The warmly drawn characters help ground an imaginative if overblown premise.

(4) 1-3 Graphic Universe: Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye series. Illustrated by Stephanie Yue. When Mr. Venezi hires the perfect assistant for his pet shop, she's so good the animals don't seem to need him anymore. It's up to Sasspants, grouchy and unpleasant guinea pig detective, to bring back Mr. Venezi. The story line is supported by crowded cartoon-panel illustrations with touches of humor (especially in the animal characters' facial expressions).
