All Their Names Were Courage: A Novel of the Civil War

(4) 1-3 Kentucky-born Sallie and her brother William, a soldier in the Union army, send each other letters throughout the Civil War, paying most attention to the horses in the war. Sallie writes to the generals about their horses, and the generals' replies are included. Though the generals' letters are stiff and lack the ring of authenticity, the siblings' letters conversationally convey the period in enjoyable prose.
