Angela and the Baby Jesus

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Raúl Colón. Six-year-old Angela worries that the baby Jesus in the church Nativity is cold, so she steals the doll-like statue and brings it home. McCourt's telling, based on an event in his mother's life, is heartfelt but sentimental. Colón's watercolor and pencil illustrations of the human-looking baby and rosy-cheeked Irish children convey the warmth and love of an idealized Christmas season.
