He nurses the bird back to health, and later the recovered pigeon returns to the old man, now failing, and in her way she cares for him. Angelo's last act is to build a permanent stucco nest for his dear friend. The offbeat friendship is charming, there are entertaining details throughout, and the grand old city of Rome is evoked in all her bustle and luminosity.
