Efraín of the Sonoran Desert: A Lizard's Life among the Seri Indians

(4) 4-6 Illustrated by Janet K. Miller. Astorga, a Seri woodcarver and storyteller, tells about the lizard that visited her every day until wild dogs ate it. Nabhan, an ethnobotanist, disjointedly frames Astorga's story with information about endangered animals, peoples, and languages, including the Seri people who live in the harsh Sonoran climate. Faux-naive paintings in vibrant colors show interesting juxtapositions between the natural world and the contemporary Seri.
