When Cookie disappears, though, Eliza is surprisingly worried about her. The reasons for Eliza's turnaround are unclear, but the story may appeal to readers who are themselves unsure about unfamiliar creatures. Speir's acrylic illustrations feature comfortingly soft hues and rounded edges.
