These books provide overviews of their time periods, each picking up where the previous one leaves off (except for Frontier, which covers the colonial era through the War of 1812). The writing is a bit bland, and some of the maps are repeated from book to book. Liberal use of black-and-white and color illustrations, maps, and sidebars enliven the texts.
