Unfortunately, the story's broadly drawn personalities are all ensnared in an oversupply of heavy issues (McCarthyism, mistreatment of the mentally challenged, atheism, nuclear warfare, and political misdeeds, to name a few), and a rushed ending keeps readers at a distance.
