For wiggleskins--mild, gray, clamlike sea creatures--life is mainly lived "necks in." After a "hornly scratcher" (a human keen to eat them) attacks, young Edwin must save the group. The heavily worked-over acrylic and ink illustrations in oceanic and earthy hues show the degree of Ering's dedication to bringing the wiggleskin world to life; his text is entertaining but not quite as inspired.
