Papi's Gift

(4) K-3 Illustrated by René King Moreno. When drought plagues their Mexican village, seven-year-old Graciela's papi leaves to work in California. Graciela waits sadly for a birthday package from him that never arrives, and although Mama makes her a beautiful doll, Graciela longs for the gift gone astray. The story is wordy and meandering but ultimately hopeful. Soft, fuzzy-focused pastels depict the story's rural Mexican setting.
