When orphan Alli Rosco suffers a potentially fatal magical curse, aspiring thief Beck tells her that joining the Thieves Guild will secure money for the cure. Their plan to gain admittance to the Guild--stealing a noblewoman's necklace--goes badly awry. Narrative threads about "belonging" end in an abrupt, confusing reversal, but the thievish adventure and warm camaraderie/romance between the two principals are appealing.
