Carle's spare text and signature tissue-paper collages relate the story of a mellow sloth who is called quiet, lazy, and boring by the other jungle animals, but defends his (upside-down) position by explaining, "That's just how I am." Jane Goodall's foreword makes a plea for animal preservation, but it seems directed more at adults than the children who will be lulled by this gentle tale.
