FOLKTALES AND NURSERY RHYMES

Texas Mother Goose

(4) PS Illustrated by Sue Marshall Ward. Fifty-one traditional Mother Goose rhymes are recast with deep-in-the-heart-of-Texas flavor. City names (Austin, Corpus Christi), Southwestern foods (chili, jerky), and Spanish words (huevos rancheros, mercado) are sprinkled throughout. Some selections work: "Cowpoke Georgie, sweet pecan pie / Kissed cowgirls and made them sigh"; others are strained and don't fit the cadence of the originals. Color illustrations enliven the text.
