The Blue Jackal

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Dileep Joshi. In a rhymed adaptation of an Indian Panchatantra tale, a jackal, blue from falling into indigo dye, becomes king of the animals. He banishes his jackal relatives who've always treated him badly but loses his position when the others realize that he's just a jackal. The striking illustrations are in the "repetitive and highly symbolic" Western Indian Warli style, traditionally white rice-flour paintings on mud.
