The Dog That Nino Didn't Have

(4) K-3 Translated by Laura Watkinson. Illustrated by Anton van Hertbruggen. In this bleak story of loneliness, Nino's only companion is an imaginary dog. His father is far off; his mother and great-grandmother are background figures. When he gets a real dog, he adjusts but then invents many other animals "that he doesn't have." The palette of dark greens, browns, and russets evokes sadness and solitude.
