The Gilded Cage

(4) YA 1820s Virginia farm girl Katherine's brother drowns after inheriting an English estate, leaving Katherine as the sole heir. Refusing to believe it was accidental, she investigates his death amid swirling rumors of a beast on the estate. Romance and mystery are the novel's real focus, while a lackluster attempt at gothic horror never really coalesces; the Victorian tropes are obvious but nevertheless entertaining.
