The Tale of the Swamp Rat

(4) 4-6 Ossie the swamp rat is orphaned when a snake eats his family. He survives only because Uncle Will, the ancient gator, takes him in and teaches him about the swamp. The narrative (by a mole) is wide-ranging and slow moving (sometimes too slow moving), covering swamp society, a fire, and the drought that nearly kills the swamp animals.
