Tuk and the Whale

(4) 4-6 Illustrated by Mary Jane Gerber. In the early 1600s, Tuk, an Inuit boy, sees a ship approaching his Baffin Island home. He learns that the European sailors aboard seek help hunting the bowhead whale. The book includes many authentic details, though Tuk's grandfather's "dream" foretelling the whalers' arrival lends it a distracting New Agey tone. Black-and-white spot art and atmospheric full-page images accompany the text. Reading list, websites. Bib., glos.
