Here's another spunky, sassy Southern narrator living in a town of interesting eccentrics (à la Because of Winn-Dixie). Vilonia is writing obituaries for the local newspaper in place of her mother, who's been depressed since Nana died. It's a lot to manage, since she's also cooking, campaigning for a dog, playing softball, and trying to maintain friendships. The happy ending is predictable but well earned and satisfying.
