James E. Ransome.
It's Visiting Day, and the young narrator knows that she and Grandma will be going to see Daddy at the place where "Daddy is doing a little time." Staying true to the girl's perspective, the focus is on the steps of the journey and the anticipation that fuels it. The paintings are richly, warmly colored and attentive to the human bonds that shape the story. The author and artist's autobiographical notes give the story personal resonance.
