When I Was Older

(2) 4-6 Sophie's brother died from leukemia three years ago, and since then, her mother has divorced her philandering husband, Sophie and her sister are unable to discuss their father, and boys have started to call. The novel's strengths lie in the concrete New York City setting and in Sophie's blunt voice, which is invested with humor. The author's handling of grief and family dynamics and the subtle thematic treatment of time shape this first novel.
