Your Truck

(2) PS Your Things series. Expanding on the concept of his Your Places books (Your Farm, Your Forest, and Your Island, all rev. 1/25), Klassen here explores a familiar thing in many a child's life: trucks. The text begins by establishing ownership: "This is your truck. It is yours to have." Discussion of possible truck colors ("It is a red truck. There could be other colors too, though"), followed by items for it to carry (the second-person narrator settles on a dog "for now"), and movement ("when you say to go fast, it will go fast") encourage the littlest vehicle fans to use their imaginations and ponder philosophically: "It will take you as far away from here as you want." Repetition in the short, direct text is child-friendly, as are the understated illustrations, which feature classic Klassen expressive eyes for all animate and inanimate characters. A mix of verso and double-page-spread text placements and the fact that the truck itself is always illustrated facing right help "drive" the story forward. Similarities to the Your Places series abound (including everything going to sleep at the end: "think about where you will go in your truck tomorrow"), yet this new series opener still feels fresh and creative. It's pedal to the metal for Klassen in the board book world.
