This picture-book biography of the man born Stanley Lieber traces his story from growing up in poverty in the Bronx, to running errands at Timely Comics, to creating Spider-Man and many other "perfectly imperfect superheroes" at Marvel Comics. It also covers his dedication to his readers through his monthly "Stan's Soapbox" column and his work to promote real-world heroism. The accompanying mixed-media illustrations have suitable comic-book flair, depicting Lee's life in sepia tones and the characters he created in vibrant colors. A bibliography is appended.

This picture book introduces artist and television personality Bob Ross: his early years loving nature and animals; his military career in Alaska; and the home he found on public television, where he filmed hundreds of episodes of The Joy of Painting from 1983 to 1994. Quotes by the artist are interspersed throughout in red type, demonstrating his gentle, encouraging style. The soft but appropriately colorful illustrations, including a few stunning double-page spreads, show vignettes from Ross's life (and showcase his growing hairstyle). More information about Ross and his TV show, a glossary of applicable art terms, and a bibliography are appended.

This picture book biography describes how Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, a librarian and a postal clerk, assembled an enormous art collection in their New York City apartment, then donated it to the National Gallery of Art. The mid-century-style illustrations convey the movement and energy of life in the 1960s; they also depict the Vogels' home, crowded with artwork, animals, and (famous) friends. Throughout, look for the many nods to notable creators and pieces of art from the time. An appended spread includes definitions of relevant artistic movements (e.g., "conceptual art"; "minimalism") and notes from the author, illustrator, and Dorothy Vogel herself.

(3) K-3 Ready-to-Read: You Should Meet series. Illustrated by Alexandra Badiu. The Japanese artist, fashion designer, and writer Yayoi Kusama "never stopped following her dreams." Readers learn about Kusama's childhood and career, from Japan to New York City and back; the focus is on her creativity and determination in the face of obstacles (for example, plagiarism of her work by male peers, including Andy Warhol). The cleanly designed early reader features illustrations bursting with color, many pages featuring Kusama's signature polka dots. Some loosely related facts about Japan, art, and artists, along with a comprehension quiz, are included.
