"Marching is something people do together when they want to resist injustice or when they notice the need for change." This straightforward introduction to why and how people participate in peaceful demonstrations talks in general about the topic while the illustrations feature specific causes, moments in history, and activists. Ink and watercolor vignettes on white pages are small but mighty, as people of all races and ages show up for causes from history (women's suffrage, civil rights, labor conditions) and the present (BLM, ACT UP, the climate strike). A final spread provides brief information about the twenty-five "movements, marches, & key figures" in the art.

Fourteen poets (both well-known and less so) use a variety of forms (e.g., tanka, free verse, spoken word) to reflect on the work and influence of young change makers. Each of the activists is celebrated by "a poet who relates to an aspect of the activist's identity." The young subjects' causes include bullying prevention, clean water, healthcare for Native people, and Down syndrome advocacy. A (fictional) story demonstrates the power of voting. As her grandmother campaigns in support of a vote to save the town's wilderness park, Callie participates in her class's election for their next field trip: cookie factory or wilderness park. Callie supports visiting the park and hopes to raise awareness about its importance in their community. Friendly cartoon illustrations show a diverse group of kids engaged in learning and eventually enjoying the winning trip to the wilderness. Information about elections and voting in the US, a voting rights timeline, and lists of related websites and books are appended.
