While grieving the death of her adoptive mother, Ellen searches for and finds her birth mother, a lawyer who eventually becomes her father's new love. A number of plot lines are woven together here, some not altogether believably. This fourth book about Ellen is most successful when directly exploring the different characters' emotions.

In her third book, Ellen is left to her own devices during summer break when her best friend goes away to camp. Ellen meets a new friend and accidentally becomes a volunteer at Peacehaven, a home for seniors. Set in a small town in Canada, the story has an old-fashioned feel that will appeal to some readers (though others may find the voice contrived).
