"Lionel loved to roar"--but he is so loud that he upsets all the other animals. He scoffs when his mama suggests he draw instead of scream but soon discovers (after losing his voice) that drawing can be fun. Cheery, Lion King–like illustrations and a swift-moving (if obvious) plot do tired parents a solid, suggesting to a child that fun can be had quietly.

The rabbit family that previously celebrated Hanukkah (Hoppy Hanukkah!) now joyously observes Passover. Siblings Violet and Simon participate in traditions such as reciting the Four Questions and preparing the Seder plate. The rabbit-children's infectious excitement comes across in both text and illustrations (though the cheerful, pastel-colored palette and bouncing bunnies may bring to mind another springtime holiday).

Paddywack, a pony, narrates the story of how her girl Jane learns to ride--and to consistently remember to bring treats to reward Paddywack for each lesson the pony gives to her. This very slight girl-and-her-horse story with a twist, illustrated with gentle barnyard scenes, will amuse newly independent horse-loving readers.

Dad decides to accept his kids' invitation to have a "wild Father's Day." They imitate animals, running like cheetahs in the park and swimming like dolphins in the pool. A spark of fun is added to the repetitive text through the illustrations showing family members as animals but still wearing their trademark accessories (glasses, hat, or pink sneakers).

A bunny family celebrates Hanukkah. Siblings Violet and Simon enter boisterously into the festivities, and their enthusiastic missteps ("Now let's light them!" says Simon of the menorah candles; "Not until the sun sets," answers Papa) allow readers to learn the holiday's rituals. The bunnies are winsome in their vividly colored people-clothes, and sunny yellow backdrops telegraph the book's feel-good holiday message.

While playing hide-and-seek on Christmas Eve, bunny Snowball falls asleep among a pile of presents by Santa's sleigh. Upon being discovered, he's employed to help the big guy deliver the loot. Though the story line and denouement are overly familiar, the cozy winter illustrations have appeal.

As young mouse Littletail and her father, Longtail, play together in the woods, Longtail delivers a message about growing up and how things change ("One day you will be too fast for me to catch"). There's nothing new about the clichéd sentiment, but Howarth's warm illustrations convey the loving father-daughter relationship.
