Illustrated by
Elisa Kleven.
All day, the weaver watches Earth from above, weaving what she sees into a wondrous coat full of memories; the coat "drifts down" from the nighttime sky, bringing protection to the sleeping people below. Hurd's abstract text is lyrical and dreamy. Kleven's vivid, exuberant paintings draw readers in to search for tiny images from Earth repeated in the fabric.

Frogs, frogs, and more frogs leap around the pages of this book. Engaged in various antics--burping, slurping, swinging from chandeliers--these animated amphibians are gleefully determined to "be bad frogs forever." Kids will get a kick out of the unrepentant misbehavior shown in the bright, digitally enhanced watercolor, colored-pencil, and ink illustrations and aptly described in rollicking rhymed text.

Gertrude Elliott.
Two little gardeners work hard cultivating their crops. After preparing one fresh and delicious meal, they have plenty left to can and store. The illustrations depict a bucolic world that might be too sweet for some readers (although details in the art add humor). The melodic text is accompanied by music to a song called "Full as a Fiddle."

The Sleepy Cadillac floats up to "your" window ("Climb aboard!") and through the dusky air--over city, country, and sea, up toward the moon. Hurd's muted palette is punctuated with headlights, moonlight, a fading sunset, and auto-related touches. The litany of the familiar, together with the luscious, drowsy colors, is sure to lull little drivers contentedly to sleep.

In Hurd's out-of-this-world comedy, Farmer George and the animals are asleep when a loud KABOOM wakes them. The farmer is befuddled to find Moo Cow gone. It turns out that the cow is truly over the moon, cownapped by an intergalactic cowboy named Zork. On Planet 246, Moo Cow gets roped into a rodeo, but her style is a bit rough for Zork. Hurd's illustrations, a riot of crayon and collage, send this funny tale into the stratosphere.

A rollicking rhyme and jazzy pictures make this board book ideal for reading aloud. A troop of pajama-clad kitties dance through several nighttime scenes, pausing to play musical instruments and munch a fishy feast. At the book's end, the colorful cats snuggle together in one big bed. Eye-catching illustrations feature bright figures against a dark cityscape background.

Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series.
Illustrated by
Robin Brickman.
Brickman has done startling new cut-paper collage illustrations for Hurd's beginning-reader book on starfish. Watercolor washes, marbling techniques, and shocking colors portray the starfish in all their chromatic glory, while the simple text points out their intrinsic oddities, such as the fact that they can regrow lost limbs.

After a sleigh malfunction sends Santa Mouse and his ratdeer plunging from the sky into the middle of a snowy wood, the disgruntled ratdeer head off to find the beach. What they find instead is a mouse named Rosie who welcomes them into her house. Warmed by cookies, hot chocolate, and a toasty fire, Santa and the ratdeer fix the sleigh and the Christmas caravan takes off again. Bright watercolors illustrate the breezy holiday story.

Harper Growing Tree series.
Hurd's illustrations are eye-catching, and the rhyming text is filled with action and car-related sounds. Toddlers may enjoy the book, with its car-crazy animals and exciting car crashes ("Faster...Faster! Watch out! Too fast! CRASH! DISASTER!"), but the illustrations--a neon-colored melange of photos and drawings--are more appropriate for, and will be better appreciated by, an older audience.
