A new apprentice to Michelangelo, Marco is undermined and embarrassed by a jealous senior apprentice. But when summoned to Rome to paint the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo selects Marco to accompany him because of Marco's paint-making skills and his loyalty. The long but well-told story helps to illuminate the methods of a master artist; handsome paintings ably convey setting and mood.

The Mona Lisa herself narrates this story, based on true events, of her 1911 abduction from the Louvre and subsequent temporary relocation to Italy. Into a northern mill town in the 1940s come Arabella and her glamorous mother, a piano teacher. As outsiders, they must prove their merit to a rigid classroom teacher, reluctant parents, and would-be young pianists--a mission finally accomplished when Arabella concludes the first recital with impressive musicianship. Though the plot is predictable, the time and place are effectively realized in the color-saturated, sometimes stiff illustrations.

The full-page oil paintings sometimes appear stiff but add pictorial richness to this illustrated version. Each chapter opens with a letter decorated with Prince Edward Island wildflowers; small watercolor and ink drawings also appear scattered throughout the book. A foreword by one of Montgomery's grandchildren leads readers into the story.
