Fourth-grader Martha Snapdragon is persecuted by a bully and the principal at her janitor-father's school; a wizard-teacher's instruction and an Excalibur-style spoon in the wall enable her to overcome them and become king of the school. The choppy, zany narration proves wearing after a while, but the mingled fantasy and realism elements and Martha's underdog triumph create an emotionally satisfying story.
