Bradley (Paleo Sharks) traces the evolution of arthropods from 530 million years ago to today. With a crisp graphic format and a handsome color palette, each double-page spread includes a central illustration featuring a dramatic portrayal of several creatures (often doing battle); to-scale silhouettes of the animals and a human child; and information about present-day relatives. Reading list. Bib., glos.

Bradley's chronologic tour of extinct shark species employs a smart design and sharp graphics to tie together the encyclopedia-like entries. Each two-page layout includes one or two profiles of sharks, a related text box, and a to-scale comparison. In the accompanying illustrations, sharks sport colorful stripes, spots, and other markings (though Bradley is careful to explain that these are his interpretations). Reading list. Bib., glos.
