A Diamond in the Dust

(4) YA Katy longs to escape the poverty and danger of life in a coal town, but her mother's determination to marry her off and her developing feelings for a childhood friend complicate her plans. The descriptions of Katy's wretched home life are heart-wrenching, but the writing is not well polished, and Katy does not always act her age. The story does offer a historical glimpse into a way of life not often depicted in young-adult novels.
