Isabel's House of Butterflies

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Susan Guevara. Thousands of monarch butterflies spend each winter on a tree next to eight-year-old Isabel's home in Michoacán, Mexico. In spite of the family's desperate poverty, Isabel and her parents try to avoid cutting the tree down to sell the wood. Johnston leaves readers with hope without creating an unrealistic ending to this contemporary story. The textured paintings are framed with thick borders, reminiscent of the folk art of the region.
