The Fire Horse Girl

(4) YA Jade Moon, a young Chinese woman, is a Fire Horse: the worst Chinese zodiac sign for a female. She's stubborn, defiant, and fierce--a shame to her family. After immigrating to the United States, she gains independence by dressing as a man. The story ultimately becomes somewhat ludicrous, but a well-executed focus on American immigration in 1923 and a strong narrative voice compensate.
