The Great Bridge-Building Contest

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Roxie Munro. In 1850, Lemuel Chenoweth, an uneducated cabinetmaker from the hills of Virginia, successfully competed against well-known engineers to design a bridge to cross Richmond's Tygart River. The conversational text and ink and watercolor illustrations document the competition and the building of the bridge, as well as some history. A brief biography and information about American covered bridges are appended.
