Amanda is totally into her fifth-grade class assignment, writing a diary from the point of view of a Civil War–era girl. The entries are filled with emotion--possibly because Amanda's father is moving out and her loyalties are torn--and readers will appreciate the diary's cathartic nature. Mills's likable protagonist, well-integrated subplots, and emotionally involving story are perfectly aimed at her audience.
