Three Ladies Beside the Sea

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Edward Gorey. "Once there were three homes / That stood beside the sea; / In each house lived a lady / Of great nobility": supremely happy Edith of Ecstasy, ever-smiling Catherine of Compromise, and Alice of Hazard, who sits in a tree waiting for a bird. Alice's longing won't seem particularly relatable to kids, but Levine's lilting rhymes and Gorey's always intriguing illustrations have appeal.
